Abstract

|
As the cosmetic industry moves towards the new Millennium it continues to make
extraordinary contribution to the quality of life and recently also to the quality and care
of the world's population. In sprite of the achievement, the industry faces unpresidented
challenges as regulatory bodies in EU, US, Japan etc. and consumers are all raising
questions about safety, performance and efficacy. It is therefore an appropriate moment
to understanding new challenges, where skin care is going in Europe and predict how it
will need to shape itself in the new century. A number of efficacious ingredients from
the pharmaceutical field, have been adopted for use in cosmetics. Their efficacy often
depends on the concentration and delivery. There is clearly a grey area when such
active products stop being pharmaceuticals and start being cosmetics.
